Black salt… have you heard of it? Prior to going vegan, I never even knew that there was such a salt and am amazed with how awesome black salt is. 

I tried black salt yesterday for the very first time and wow, is it an impressive salt with tremendous health benefits! The first time I heard about black salt was from Lou Corona, one of my father and I’s inspirators eating high raw living foods. Lou uses black salt in his sunflower seed tuna recipe because it makes the recipe taste like tuna. Black salt has a hard boiled egg taste because it’s an excellent source of sulfur!

Black salt, also known as kala Namak is believed to come from the Himalayas. This type of salt contains a lot of sulfur, iron and other essential minerals vital for the body. Although at first glance the color of the salt is black, due to the high iron levels, black salt will change to pink.

Compared to white salt, black salt is lower in sodium so it is more healthy to consume. In fact, many doctors recommend consuming black salt for those who suffer from high blood pressure.

There are three types of black salt:

  1. Black ritual salt
  2. Black lava salt
  3. Black Indian salt


Black ritual salt, also referred to as Witches’ Salt, is not for consuming. This type of salt is used for purification and in protection rites. Black salt is used to ward away evil and negative energies. Black ritual salt is derived and mixed from from the scrapings of charred herbs, ash, and iron at the bottom of the cauldron mixed with salt.

Black lava salt is black in color and is sea salt that’s blended with activated charcoal. It has an earthy flavor, usually originating from Hawaii or Cyprus. Often times, you may see it labeled as Hawaiian Black Salt. I

Indian black salt, or kala namak, is an Indian volcanic rock salt, known by the names including Himalayan black salt, sulemani namak, and kala loon. It’s commonly used in Pakistan, India and other Asian countries. It starts out as Himalayan Pink Salt or sodium chloride and is then heated to extremely high temperatures, mixed with Indian spices and herbs including the seeds of the harad fruit which contains rich levels of sulfur. In addition, Indian Black Salt also contains trace impurities of sulfates, sulfides, iron and magnesium which all contribute to the salt’s color, smell and taste.

Some varieties of black salt, such as black lava salt, are black in color, but many aren’t. In its rock form, it ranges from brownish-pink to deep purple color. When the salt is grounded up, it becomes a pinkish-gray or light purple color. When mixed up with food, it becomes a deep red with purple and brown tints. The color is due to the iron sulfides contained in black salt.

How does it taste?
The taste of Indian black is very quite comparable to hard-boiled eggs due to the sulfur levels. Due to the distinctive, egg like taste, black salt is often used and makes a great addition in eggless recipes and a perfect addition to salads. 

Since ancient times, Indian black salt has been used and is said to have been identified by the father of Ayurvedic medicine, Maharishi Charak, around 300 B.C.E. Some claims from Ayurvedic healers that this type of black salt can be therapeutic, too. Black salt is considered a cooling spice and it is used as a laxative to help with digestive problems, poor eyesight and hysteria. Black salt contains less sodium than table salt so it can be helpful for people with high blood pressure and good for those who are diabetic.
